With the New Year looming, it is time to start thinking about those New Years resolutions! I must admit, life has become so busy for me that regular swimming has fallen by the way. I need to get back into it, but how? I have found that the best way to motivate myself is to produce a written contract with myself! Sure, this may sound extreme but it makes it official. I agree a date and time with myself and then that's it - there's no going back.
My colleague, Prof. Paul Grob who is also a GP, set up a website to do just that. Feel free to check it out at www.committochange.stickk.com It allows you to make a commitment contract with yourself. On this site, you even have the option of increasing your chances of successfully sticking to your exercise, by allowing you to create a financial stake. Fail to go the gym and you lose your money (it goes to your nominated charity). Succeed and you get to keep your money. It may sound rather extreme but research has shown that your chances of successfully achieving a goal is far greater with financial stakes. Whichever way works best for you - go for it and let me know how you get on. Best of luck!
